If OASIS Gallery’s Artist of the Month selection has a lesson, it’s this: full-time work does not necessarily mean giving up on art.

During September and October, the gallery has chosen two of its associate members to share gallery space, proving that there’s always time for creativity, according to Sarah Lock, chairman of the gallery’s exhibition committee. Usually, artists who hold full gallery membership — contributing art while also volunteering in various capacities at OASIS — are featured as the artist of the month, Lock explained. However, members decided this time to shine the spotlight on artists who may not have the time for a full commitment to the gallery, yet do what they can to further its mission of sharing and selling local art to a local audience. “We want to let people know we accept any level of participation,” she added.

OASIS’ featured artists create works that reveal the way they see the Valley they love. The ways they choose to represent those views, however, create a fascinating juxtaposition meant to entice both traditionalists and modern art lovers and everyone in between. “D’Vine Design” baskets by Brenda Fairweather evoke a traditional Valley craft.

Comforting Tradition

What could be more traditional Valley art than the functional yet beautiful rib-style basket? Made of materials often found in the surrounding countryside, this homey staple is designed to hold everything from eggs to desk accessories.

Brenda Fairweather, who works at Eastern Mennonite University, knows the simple power of the basket. Her baskets feature grapevine handles, sea grass and colorful fabric strips, adding unique touches to a familiar design.

Fairweather, who lives with her husband and family in Lacey Spring, began weaving baskets 20 years ago. But, motherhood and work distracted her from basketry until about six years ago, when the kids had grown and she had some time to herself. Since then, she has enjoyed practicing her art both privately and in group settings.

Whether weaving alone or in a group, however, basketry “is like art therapy,” Fairweather said. She sometimes takes solitary quiet “retreats” into the woods around her home searching for vines and reed materials. The very act of weaving also allows her to meditate, pray and contemplate, providing welcome respite from her busy life.

And there’s no disputing the response most folks have to baskets, Fairweather said. Filled with baby gifts or basic household items, theme baskets make welcome gifts for the mom-to-be and newlyweds. Baskets also add warmth to any décor.

Fairweather joined OASIS nearly a year ago, and her baskets have been staple items scattered about the space. She’s appreciative of the Artist of the Month honor. “It makes you feel it’s a way to be more known,” she said.
